Lesson 16: Comment Marketing

Welcome to lesson 16 on blogging.

Comment marketing has pretty much been misused because many blogs are recommending their readers to use blog commenting as a way to drive traffic but did not provide enough information on how to do it. Do a few blog hops and you will notice most comments left are short and with no value/contributions added to the article.

I understand that there are times when the articles are pretty concrete and you want to thank or show appreciation to the blog owner for sharing his knowledge. You can continue doing this but not on every other articles.

There is a purpose on every single action that you take. For example, why do you blog? Your response could be one of the below:

You blog to build up your company’s presence,

You blog to make some extra income online

OR

You blog to share your experiences with similar interest groups

So what is the purpose of doing blog commenting?

What Is Comment Marketing & Its Purpose?

Comment marketing is a technique used to drive traffic and build up your online presence by leaving constructive comments on other blogs. The purpose of comment marketing, other than driving traffic, is to build relationship with fellow bloggers of related niche.

If you read my first post on marketing your blog, you would know that there isn’t a technique available to get your blog popular instantly. All you can do is to take small marketing steps to build up your blog. Unless you are lucky enough and got recognized by a “A” list blogger, it will take you at least 3-6 months to get your blog popular.

Fellow bloggers can help to promote your contents that are relevant for their readers but you will need to comment regularly on their blog first before your name will catch their attention. Be practical and avoid approaching the top bloggers as they are very busy. Building mutual relationship with bloggers is the only way to open your blog up to a large traffic pool.

Remember this in mind when doing comment marketing:

Focus on providing valuable comment on the article and at the same

time foster a relationship with the blogger.

3 Steps To Successful Comment Marketing

Step 1: Concentrate commenting on a few blogs

As I have mention earlier, the purpose of comment marketing is to get the attention of the blog owner. Therefore, dropping 1-2 comments on every blog that you go will not get you any results. Instead, pick 5-10 blogs of your related niche and post comments that contribute to the topic. Do it continuously for 1 month and the blog owner will definitely notice your presence.

Step 2: Drop constructive comment

I suggest to subscribe to the blogs’ feed and try to comment on every post. Add in your own experience or tell a story related to the blog post. Leave comments that will have an impact on the article.

Step 3: Foster relationship with blogger

By the end of 1 month, if you follow the 2 steps above, you would have gotten the attention of the blogger and he would most probably have drop by your blog. This is the chance where you can get access to a large traffic source.

You can either contact the blogger to take a look at your article or he might even link to your article himself if you have great content published. But this is only effective if you are not targeting the large blogs.

Building Backlinks With Comment Marketing

Not only does comment marketing help in driving traffic and fostering relationship with bloggers but also build up backlinks. You will discover later that backlinks are actually helpful in driving traffic when I let you know more about SEOs. Now I will introduce it to you on how you can build backlinks by doing comment marketing.

1) DoFollow & NoFollow

Simply put, you will get backlinks by commenting on DoFollow blog. On the other hand, no backlinks are built when commenting on a NoFollow blog. Use the SearchStatus plugin for Firefox user to help you identify if the blog is under which category. I have previously tried to consolidate a list of DoFollow blogs but I have found a better alternative in Do Follow Diver search engine. Use this to aid you in finding DoFollow blog.

2) Top Commentators Widget

You will see some blogs with the top commentator widget. This is a good way to build quality backlinks since the widget is placed on the homepage of the blog. Homepage of a blog should have a higher importance level compared to its internal pages. Apart from gaining backlinks, you create another chance of capturing the blog owner attention when you land in the top commentators list. You can also find the list of blog with top commentators widget in Do Follow Diver search engine.

3) Comment Luv plugin

Blogs with Comment Luv plugin usually give DoFollow link or it will defeat the purpose of the plugin. Similarly look for the list of blogs in Do Follow Diver search engine.

Tasks For Lesson 16

1) Follow the 3 steps in successful comment marketing to market your blog and build backlinks.

2) Foster relationship with bloggers of related niche.

3) I advice you to use the Top Commentators and Comment Luv plugin to give credits to your commenter as well.

I was thinking of just putting great post just for a laugh but decided not too.
I understand that we as bloggers get many comments like that and just end up deleting them because they provide no value.

Although there are some posts on blogs i’ve seen that don’t require more than just a few words for a comment. I guess its up to the individiual on how much they want to write as a comment but to be approved for it is a different story.

    Hi Bruno Auger,

I pretty much agree with your view. Like I mention, some articles are very concrete and there isn’t any more value we can add to it. Therefore, dropping a compliment on such post are acceptable.

Even a few line comments are sufficient if it contributes to the topic. What I meant was try to avoid posting comments like “great post” on every single article that you leave comment on. It would hurt your credibility in the long run.

Thanks for visiting ABloggerBlog Bruno and I hope to see you around more often.

Great minds must think alike, because one of my posts yesterday was regarding comments on other people’s blogs. I agree with your strategy, though I have to admit I’ve opened it up and comment on more than 5 to 10 blogs. I do that mainly because there are some folks who write something great to comment, on, then don’t follow it up with anything you can really contribute to. I’ve also noticed the communities of people who participate on the same blogs over and over, so I end up getting into multiple communities. Nothing wrong with that. Great post.

I guess we are both convinced on the results that comment marketing can give but yet there are groups not doing this the right way. Bloggers often expect visitors to visit their blog and comment yet they are not doing it. Kinda contradictory.

I have to agree with you that there is no wrong by participating in multiple communities repetitively. Instead it will lead to a relationship being build up. Aren’t we in the process right now?

    Yes indeed, great post! Hehe

I can tell ya first hand that every single thing here works (TC plugin coming soon ;) )

I’d like to point out some things though, if I may…

    1. No-follow links do not pass Google juice from the blogger to the commenter, this is true; however, Google DOES crawl and index them…not totally worthless by any means.

    2. Technorati also pulls from the top commenter list…good to stay in it.

    3. Do-follow is not the whole basis of commentluv - my own readership, subscribers, and comments have skyrocketed due to my tweaking post titles to look yummy in commentluv enabled blogs. ;)

“I suggest to subscribe to the blogs’ feed and try to comment on every post.”

Excellent advice, although may I suggest not doing it all in the same day. LOL

Constructive or not, you will look real funny to the blogger.

Valuable comments are key. Too many times I see comments on blogs that are “one word or one liners”. It is so obvious that the commenter only left it to try and get a link back or traffic.

You have to be true to yourself or people will see through your attempts.

As for the Top Commenter plugin.

    Hi Larry,

Too many blogs are attempting to spread comment marketing to their readers without detailed information on how to go about doing it. This leads to the current situation we are in now.

Comments are getting shorter and shorter for the sake of getting a link back. That is especially so if they blog is DoFollow. Doing this continuously is bad for your blogging journey.

I seriously urge all that are reading my blog to stop putting a 1 line comment. Kick this bad habit off and you will be better off in the blogosphere community.

I agree with the idea on commenting on a few blogs regularly. This will really help build a relationship with the blogger. However, once you establish a routine, you’ll manage to fit more blogs into your routine. Commenting will really drive in traffic if you work on it.

Very nice collection of tips. The top commentator plugin is a good way to get some more comments, but also a good way to attract spammers.

    hi Wei,
Wow. First let me say what a popular blog you have. 62 comments on this post! Wow!
Anyway, I found you based on your comment over at Mitch Mitchell’s blog, and I see he commented here above. Anyway, when I find someone via their comment, I just like to let them know, so that they know humans follow comment links too.
Anyway, great post about commenting. I agree on commenting on a regular basis on a blog you like (and where you can add something of interest to the discussion) instead of bouncing around and adding a meaningless comment to every blog you come across (I hope THIS comment has meaning).
Well, I like your blog and am bookmarking it so that I can read your other “lesson” points. They look good.

After reading one of your posts on DP and seeing your link to this post; I thought, OK, let’s see if this guy has anything to say that I haven’t heard before. Your point about posting on a number of blogs regularly rather than using a scatter-gun approach makes great sense. Gotta say, I haven’t seen that suggestion before. Will definitely be giving that one a try!

Now off to see your older posts and see what other great ideas you have.

I’ll be honest. This is the first time I’m here and I’m very very impress with all these structured learning process. Keep up the good work. You can compile all these and create a book. It will be wonderful.

I saw you article on stumble upon at Digital point. I wish all bloggers allow do-follow comments as it can only benefits each other, but since people thing they waste pagerank they disallow it, while trying to get pagerank juice from others.

At the end of the day, it all should work out, you get some, you give some. My blog is a DO_follow blog drop by to comment on

    Hi Cars for sale,

Blog commenting is a very powerful marketing tool if used correctly. But i advise you to use your name instead of the keywords as your commentator name.

People generally disliked the idea of putting keywords as commentator name but you can choose “your name | Cars for sale” which is better in my opinion.

I have the search status plug-in, but never used it effectively. Going back to comment marketing, There are many points that you have mentioned above, we tend to take lightly, but, when taken care of, it can do wonders.

    Hi Vol Cars,

Blog commenting is one of the easiest way yet effective in marketing a blog. Most people do not take this marketing step because they find it simply too time consuming. But I guess, commenting on 5 blogs daily isn’t too much of a time right?

    Hi Wei Liang,

thank you for your reply but then how this will be help me out to give advantage to my site.
Since the site is linked on my name instead of my targeted keyword as you have mentioned in the reply.
What i had read about link building that to take the site on the search engine with your targeted keyword you should build a link on your targeted keyword.
Can you advice me on that, That if i will put my name on the comment or my sites name on comments then will that be beneficial to my site.

    Hi Cars for sale,

I believe using targeted keywords as a comment name will work if you are not at all concerned of your reputation. As long as a blog is dofollow, blog commenting actually gives backlinks for your site.

But it don’t gives a good impression to people because you may only seem to be
